There are several ways to block light from the top of curtains. The most common way is to use a valance or a cornice. A valance is a short piece of fabric that hangs down from the top of the curtain rod. A cornice is a box-like structure that is mounted on the wall above the window. It is covered with fabric and has a lip that extends over the top of the curtain.
What You Will Need
-Ruler or a straight edge
-Thumbtacks or push pins
-Exacto knife or box cutter (optional)
-Step ladder (optional)
You will need to take the following measurements:
-The width of the window
-The length from the top of the window to where you want the curtains to end
Once you have those numbers, add 6 inches to the width and 2 inches to the length. Curtains are usually hung on rods that are at least 2 inches in diameter, so you will need that extra fabric just in case. For instance, if your window is 60 inches wide and 36 inches long, your fabric should be 66 inches wide by 38 inches long.
Step One: Choose A Curtain Fabric
Most people want to block light from coming in from the top of the curtains. There are a few things you need to do in order to make sure you get the right fabric. The first thing you need to do is look for a curtain that has a high thread count. This means that the fabric is tightly woven and will not let any light through. Another thing to look for is a fabric that is PVC free. PVC free means that the fabric has no chemicals in it and is safe for your family.
Step Two: Cut The Fabric To Size
Cut the fabric to size. You will need enough fabric to cover the entire length of the curtain rod, plus about four inches on each end. For this project, we are going to make blackout curtains, so we will be using a black fabric.
Step Three: Hem The Sides Of The Fabric
The easiest way to keep light from coming in from the top of your curtains is to simply hem the sides of the fabric. You can do this by hand or with a sewing machine, but either way, it’s a relatively simple process. Just fold over the edges of the fabric and sew them down, making sure to leave a small gap at the top so that you can thread a rod through. Once you’ve hemmed the sides, light should be effectively blocked from coming in from the top.
Step Four: Create A Rod Pocket At The Top Of The Fabric
Attach the drapery rings to the top of the fabric. Sew a rod pocket at the top of the fabric, using a 1/2-inch seam allowance. Fold down the top of the fabric 1/2 inch and press. Fold down again 1 inch and press. Sew along the top edge. This will create a casing for your dowel rod or decorative rod.
Step Five: Hang The Curtains
Most curtains come with hooks or tabs at the top, which make hanging them a breeze. If your curtains don’t have these, you can easily add them yourself. Once your curtains are hung, you can adjust the amount of light coming into the room by opening or closing them as needed.
